Barbados may have been named by Portuguese sailors in reference to the
bearded fig trees of the island. British settlers moved to the uninhabited
island in 1627. Sugar is a major export and slaves were used to work on the
sugar plantations. They were later freed in 1834.
Once a British colony, the road to self-rule was a slow process but eventually
ended with independence in 1966. Many British traditions are still followed
there.
